Driver killed in US school bus accident

A shcool bus crashed Monday in the U.S. state of New Mexico, killing the driver and injuring at least nine children aboard, authorities said.

The bus, which belongs to the Mesa Vista Consolidated School District, was carrying elementary, middle and high school students when it veered off a road in a mountainous area in north New Mexico, according to ABC news.

It was not clear whether the driver, a 69-year-old man, had a heart attack or died from the crash, officials said.

Six injured students were taken to a nearby hospital with broken bones and scratches, said the district superintendent Tracie Phillips. Three other children were treated at the scene and were released.

"It is a tragedy and we are very saddened by events today," Phillips said. "We are providing counseling for all of students, including those involved in the crash."

The cause of the rollover was still under investigation.

Mesa Vista Consolidated School District, an isolated small school district, has an enrollment of close to 400 students, according to reports.
