Fiji speaks for G77 at UN forum on forest
Fiji delivered a statement on behalf of the Group of 77 as its chair at the tenth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, underscoring the importance of forest financing to the group as a means of its achieving sustainable forest management, the Fijian government said Tuesday.
Inia Seruiratu, Fiji's minister of fisheries and forests, was participating in the first two days of the meeting, a dedicated ministerial segment involving plenary and two roundtable discussions. The meeting was officially opened by Turkish prime minister on Monday in Istanbul and ends next Friday.
In his statement, one of the issues Seruiratu underscored was the importance of forest financing to the G77 as a means of its achieving sustainable forest management, according to a statement from Fiji's Ministry of Information.
The call for increased level of forest funding has been a consistent position of the group and it recognizes the need for support that many developing countries require to enable them to sustainably manage their forests.
Seruiratu said there is also "a need to develop and strengthen the role of governments on forest issues, including public-private- partnerships and private sector engagement, where appropriate".
Fiji's participation in UNFF sessions "is important given the priority that (the Fijian) government places upon the sustainable development of our forests and natural resources generally", said the Ministry of Information, adding that in its capacity as chair of the G77, Fiji's involvement in the tenth UNFF session is " particularly necessary as developing countries continue to advocate their common interests as a bloc".
