An event was held on Saturday in the fourth largest U.S. city of Houston to celebrate the upcoming Earth Day and educate the public about the importance and fun of nature.

The event, Earth Day at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, features a wide variety of activities including guided habitat hikes, face painting, introduction to geocaching, puppet show, hybrid and electric vehicles display, native plant sale, workshop and children's crafts.

"The actual Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22. We've chosen April 6 this year so that we can begin the month in celebration of our earth," explained Lynne Hester, volunteer manager at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, a non-profit arboretum and nature center located in the downtown area.

"We are interested here at the arboretum in getting people out on the trails and getting them interested in different resources and conservation measures that we as individuals can take," she said.

"Our mission is teaching conservation and native species to all families, adults and especially children. What we would like to do is getting children engaged in our earth, its resources and conservation measures," Hester added.

"The aim of the event is to honor Earth Day," said Julie Shuford, a PR officer at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. "We always do this every year. It's a great way for us to have the community out to celebrate what we are about, that's preserving nature and making sure that others can appreciate it for generations to come."

Earth Day is an annual day on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It is observed on April 22 each year.
