Chinese meteorological authorities on Thursday issued a yellow warning, the third-highest alert, for strong winds on sea waters brought by a cold snap and a passing cyclone.

From Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon, southern waters of the Yellow Sea and northern parts of the East China Sea will see northerly winds hit level 9 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts registering at levels 10 to 11, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said in an online statement.

High winds at levels 7 to 8 and gusts at levels 9 to 10 will also affect eastern parts of the Bohai Sea, the Bohai Strait, parts of the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and the Beibu Gulf, as well as the Taiwan Strait and waters east of Taiwan, the center said.

The NMC warned ships and people on affected waters to return to harbor and urged authorities to reinforce port facilities and take full precautions.

China has a four-color warning system for strong winds, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
