Iran's Bushehr nuke plant 'not affected by quake'
An Iranian lawmaker said Tuesday that the 6.1-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale in Bushehr did not affect the operation at a nuclear power plant in the same province.
The plant is located about 80 km away from the epicenter of the quake and, according to the latest information, no damage of it has been reported, Abdolkarim Jamiri, representative of Bushehr province in Iran's parliament, told state-run IRINN TV. The epicenter of Tuesday's quake, with a depth of 12 km, was initially determined to be at 28.48 degrees north latitude and 51. 58 degrees east longitude.
The operator of Bushehr nuclear power plant also told official IRNA news agency that the quake has had no impact on the regular activities of the plant.
Earlier, local media reported that tremor was felt at Bushehr nuclear power plant but work in the complex was not disrupted.
Construction of Bushehr nuclear power plant was started in 1975 by several German companies. However, the work halted when the United States imposed an embargo on hi-tech supplies to Iran after the 1979 revolution. Russia signed a contract with Iran to complete the construction in 1998.
