The body of 24-year-old British woman tourist Sarah Elizabeth Groves, who was found murdered inside a houseboat in Indian-controlled Kashmir last week was Tuesday handed over to the visiting British High Commission officials.

Groves, a resident of Guernsey in the UK was allegedly stabbed to death by a 43-year-old Dutch national De-wit Richard in the wee hours of April 6. Later on police found her inside a houseboat on Dal lake in Sringar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"The body of the British woman has been handed over to the British High Commission officials, who had arrived here afternoon to receive it," said a police spokesperson. "Her body will be flown to her home town in UK."

The suspect Richard has been arrested hours after the alleged murder while trying to escape near Qazigund town, around 85 km south of Srinagar. Police said he had left behind his belongings in the houseboat and was carrying only the passport.

He has been booked under murder charges and is currently in police remand.

The postmortem report of Groves is still awaited.

Police sources said she had suffered 45 cuts on her body presumably in a physical fight during the assault. The police are trying to establish whether she was raped before the stabbing.

Police investigations revealed Richard had arrived two days back before the murder and booked a separate room in the houseboat where Groves was staying for past two months.
