Ukraine expresses condolences on Margaret Thatcher's death

Ukraine on Tuesday expressed deep condolences over the death of Britain's first female prime minister Margaret Thatcher, describing her as a gifted politician.

In their condolence messages, President Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister Mykola Azarov hailed Thatcher as a powerful, gifted politician and a great patriot.

"The first woman, who was the head of the government of the European state, has passed away. She became an example of fortitude, adherence to principles and firmness of character for many generations," Yanukovych said.

Azarov also expressed his sorrow, saying Thatcher was a very talented politician and an outstanding stateswoman, whose name is associated with one of the most important milestones in the history of Britain.

Thatcher died of a stroke on Monday at the age of 87. She held the premiership from 1979 to 1990 and was known as the "Iron Lady" worldwide.
