A blast occurred in a South African factory on Wednesday morning, leaving at least six people critically injured, local media reported.

The explosion took place at a factory in Kempton Park of the eastern province of Gauteng at 08:30 a.m. local time, causing the roof of the factory collapsed in a blaze, the News24 quoted local paramedics as saying.

The factory is a waste management company, with the operation ranging from the high pressure cleaning to asbestos removal and other hazardous waste disposals, according to the report.

Local relief service people rushed to the scene to rescue the wounded workers and extinguish the fire.

One of the critically-hurt people was airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment by a helicopter, while the other five injured workers were transported to other hospitals, said the report.

A witness from a building just opposite the factory was quoted as saying there was a rising smoke following the blast and his office windows were shocked.

It was not yet clear about the cause of the explosion and the local department was investigating into it.
