Mali helicopter crash kills 5 soldiers

An army officer and four soldiers died in a helicopter crash in central Mali, the military said on Friday.

The aircraft crashed near Sevare, an important town targeted by Al-Qaida linked rebels in their southward push in early January.

A colonel and four soldiers were on board the helicopter when it developed a mechanical problem, according to the military.

The Malian army has restored control of the northern part of the West African country with support of troops from other African countries and France, the former colonial ruler of Mali.

The military movement has been frequent as remnants of rebels are still capable of launching attacks since largely routed out in January.

The Malian government plans to hold elections in July to end the crisis, which was caused by a military coup on March 22, 2012 and the occupation of northern Mali by rebels in the aftermath of the coup.
