Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles on Monday urged his supporters to remain calm after several protests were held in the capital city against the proclamation of Nicolas Maduro as president.

"Today in the afternoon we have proposed a route to ensure compliance, to respect the right of all Venezuelans. This is the time to have discipline, to join us," Capriles said at a press conference.

Protests were reported today in Caracas and several other Venezuelan cities by opposition groups who were angry with the election results that gave a narrow victory to Maduro.

Local media reported disturbances in a main road connecting the western region of the country with the border state of Tachira. Similar situation occurred in other western states including Venezuelan Zulia, Merida, and Lara.

The opposition leader reiterated that his intention is not to ignore the popular will. "We believe that we won the election," he said, adding that the situation should be resolved peacefully.

On the proclamation of Maduro as president this afternoon, he said that it is an "illegitimate" act, reaffirming his request to have the votes recounted.

Maduro narrowly won Sunday's presidential election with 50.75 percent of the votes according to official tally. Capriles rejected the results and demanded a recount of all the votes.
