UN chief slams deadly terrorist attacks in Somali capital

UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon on Monday strongly condemned the Sunday terrorist attacks in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, that reportedly killed at least 35 people.

"The secretary-general strongly condemns the deadly attacks in Mogadishu on April 14 at the Regional Court House and near Mogadishu International Airport in which dozens of people were reported killed and injured," said a statement issued here by Ban' s spokesman Martin Nesirky. "These are brazen acts of terrorism against the government, state institutions and the people of Somalia."

"The secretary-general expresses his sincere condolences to the families of those killed and wishes the injured a rapid recovery," the statement said. "He pays tribute to the African union   Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and Somali security forces, whose courage and determination helped to bring the situation back under control."

"The secretary-general is confident that such appalling acts will not derail the determination of the Somali people to achieve peace and security in their country," it added. "He reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to support the Federal Government of Somalia, its institutions and the Somali people."

Militant fighters on Sunday launched coordinated attacks on the regional Mogadishu court building and the regional administration office where at least 35 people were killed. The Al-Shabaab group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The armed militants, who once controlled almost all of Mogadishu, were pushed out of the capital city in 2011 but continued to stage attacks.

Earlier on Monday, the UN Security Council also condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the Sunday attacks, stating that " any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable."

Also on Monday, the UN special representative to Somalia, Augustine Mahiga, said that he was "shocked and outraged" by the attacks, adding that he believed Somalia's progress toward stabilization "will not be overshadowed by the desperate acts of these cowardly terrorists." Endi
