A court in Pakistan on Wednesday extended the interim bail to former president Pervez Musharraf by a week in the case of the 2007 assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto, lawyers said.
Musharraf has been accused of failing to provide adequate security to Bhutto when she returned to Pakistan from exile in 2007. She was killed in a suicide bombing and firing in the garrison city of Rawalpindi shortly after she addressed a big public meeting.
The former president has denied any involvement and said that the case has been for political motives.
Musharraf personally appeared before the bench of the Lahore High Court in Rawalpindi under tight security where a group of lawyers chanted slogans against him. His supporters also raised slogans in his favor.
An anti-terrorism court had previously declared Musharraf a " proclaimed offender" and issued an arrest warrant for him after he failed to cooperate with investigators probing the assassination.
The court had also indicted Musharraf in the case in February 2011 after investigators had requested the court to summon him as to why he had failed to provide enough security to Benazir Bhutto.
He got interim bail after he returned Pakistan last month for the country's general elections slated for May after a four-year self-exile.
Pakistan's election authorities have disqualified him to stand for elections and his lawyers said he has filed appeals against the decision.
