5.8-magnitude quake jolts northeast Japan
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake jolted northeast Japan at around 9:03 p.m. local time on Wednesday, said the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The epicenter was initially determined at 38.5 degree north latitude, 141.6 degree east longitude, with a depth of 60 km.
The quake was registered lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 at some places in Miyagi Prefecture.
Slight tremor was felt in Tokyo and no tsunami warnings were issued as of now.
No abnormalities were found in two nuclear plants in Fukushima prefecture, local media reported, citing the operator.
Also on Wednesday, a series of earthquakes hit off Miyake island, Japan, with the highest level of 6.2 magnitude.
The JMA said there are no signs of an intensification of volcanic activities in the volcanic island, about 180 km south of Tokyo.
