Chile sends ship to Antarctica to prevent post-fire pollution
A Chilean tugboat headed to Antarctica Friday to help prevent an environmental disaster after a Chinese fishing vessel caught fire, the Chilean navy said.
The tugboat, sent by Chile's Third Navy Zone, set sail with professionals and necessary equipment to counteract a possible pollution in Antarctica, the navy said in a statement.
"The Chilean Navy is coordinating, through the Chinese Embassy in Chile and the consulate, the technical and operation proceedings to protect the Antarctic sea environment," the statement added.
All 97 crew members of the Chinese fishing vessel, Kai Xin, were rescued by a Norwegian-flagged ship Wednesday in a location 55 km northwest of Chile's O'Higgins Antarctic base after a fire broke out on board.
Also on Friday, a Chilean air force plane was sent to the area to check on the fishing ship and confirmed that it is still in flames.
