South Africa joined the rest of the world in celebrating the World Earth day on Monday.

The World Earth day is commemorated worldwide on April 22 each year to demonstrate commitment to preserve the earth.

The South African National Parks (SANParks), the premier conservation agency responsible for the national parks in the country held a commemoration of the World Earth Day at the famous Kruger National Park.

The SANParks encouraged people to recycle what they used to protect earth.

"We are all linked in some way to the earth and everything in it. There is only one earth, if you throw away rubbish, it does not just disappear. We have to recycle, reuse and reduce it ," said a SANParks environmentalist expert.

The SANParks expert advised people to reduce water and electricity consumption, calling on South Africans to take care of the natural resources to save earth.

"The SANParks has always been committed towards combating climate change and the loss of biodiversity and education around conservation, all of which are goals for the Earth Day campaign," said the expert.

The SANParks launched a green campaign at the Kruger National Park in marking the World Earth Day.

The solar-powered camp was unveiled at the Kruger National Park by the agency to reduce the dependence on generators to provide electricity.

"This is a giant green step in the right direction by foreseeing a saving of around 54,000 liters of diesel per year which impacts on our pristine environment," the agency expert said.

The green campaign included reed beds, a unique design which would minimize the footprint and water saving mechanisms on all taps.

They also removed the wastes from the park to approved recycling operations.

On the same day, the South African environmentalists used the event to clean the public sites like streets in different areas of the country.

"Issues such as the greenhouse effect, global warming, toxic waste and over-fishing, are a few of the many challenges this world faces. It is time we commit ourselves to building a healthier, cleaner and sustainable world regardless of race, gender, nationality or faith," an environmentalist said.
