S. Africans hope every day to be World Earth Day
With the World Earth Day being observed on Monday, people should make every day an earth day, a South African environmentalist said in an interview with Xinhua.
South Africans from all walks of life commemorated the World Earth Day on Monday.
The World Earth Day, which started on April 22, 1970, is observed in more than 192 countries on April 22 each year to demonstrate support for global environmental protection.
Tamerin Jardine, the current Miss Earth South Africa, told Xinhua that "those with influence like celebrities and corporates should use their positions to encourage people to protect their environment."
"Plant a tree, recycle all renewable materials and try to conserve water and electricity as a way of commemorating the World Earth Day," Jardine said.
Miss Earth South Africa spent the day in addressing different audiences on media platforms about the earth day and its importance.
Her organization, called Miss Earth South Africa, worked with a number of schools in doing tree planting in different parts of the country, including assisting students at Mondeor Primary School in Johannesburg to clean up the surroundings.
Other representatives from the organization spent the day in reaching out to the youth and communities to raise awareness about the Earth Day.
Jardine said,"We have to get the youth actively involved. Let us empower them with knowledge in terms of protecting the environment. They are our future."
The South African celebrity warned that increasing climate change will lead to catastrophic natural disasters globally if action is not taken to protect the environment.
"If we look at where our country and the world are going in terms of environmental issues, things are really changing. Some places are experiencing floods for the first time due to climate change," said the environmental expert.
"There are currently a lot of diseases due to air pollution and other unhygienic practices. People should start finding solutions to the pollution taking place in our oceans, land and airspace," she told Xinhua.
Jardine called on fast growing economies like South Africa and other countries to put the environment first.
"Industrialization is important because it brings money and a healthy economy to the country, but let us avoid destroying the beauty of our countries in the process. We must protect this beauty that brings tourists and makes people want to learn about our culture," she said.
