Earthquake causes house damage in Hungary
An earthquake measuring 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale occurring shortly after midnight on Tuesday damaged several hundred homes, mainly in Heves County, northeast of Budapest, but caused no injuries.
Gyorgy Bakondi, chief of the National Disaster Management Authority (OFK), told a news conference that utilities, hazardous facilities and dikes in flood-prone areas were all being checked and apparently none had suffered any damage.
While a significant number of homes were damaged, Bakondi said, none had collapsed and none required the evacuation of residents.
The tremor occurred near Heves city in Heves County at a depth of 8 km below the earth surface.
Hungary is not in an earthquake-prone location but does have between 100 and 120 tremors, measuring less than 2.5 on the Richter scale, each year. The most serious earthquake recorded in the region occurred in 1763 when a 6.2-magnitude quake caused serious damage and a significant loss of life.
The last earthquake measuring more than 4.0 on the Richter scale was a 4.7 quake in 2011 that cause little damage.
