At least 50 killed in Bangladesh building collapse

At least 50 people were killed and several hundreds injured after an eight-storey building on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka collapsed on Wednesday morning.

"At least 50 bodies have so far been recovered," Israfil Alam, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Labor and Employment, told Xinhua on the spot.

Niilufar Yasmin, a fire service official, said that the building which houses a ready-made garment factory, a bank's branch and hundreds of shops, collapsed at about 9:00 a.m. local time.

With many people believed to be trapped inside, rescuers fear the death toll may rise significantly.

Army personnel were called in to assist the rescue operation.

Local residents also clawed through piles of rubble to search for survivors, alongside earthmovers and excavators.
