2013 Academy of Chocolate Awards celebrated in London
The Academy of Chocolate celebrated the best chocolates at an Awards ceremony in London Tuesday evening.
Italian chocolate maker Amedei returned for the fifth time, sharing the Golden Bean awards with U.S. newcomer Bar au Chocolat.
The winners were picked by judges who tasted some 580 products from 80 producers around the world. Entries were received not only from European countries like Italy, France and Germany, but from the United States, Canada, Australia, Vietnam and Madagascar as well.
Altogether 15 categories of awards were announced.
"The winning products are entitled to use the Academy's exclusive Award logo on pack, which gives chocolate lovers a marque to look for," said Academy of Chocolate Chairman Sara Jayne-Stanes.
"The awards are a valuable way for producers to build credibility as a skilled artisan business and gain recognition for their products as meeting the highest standards of integrity and craft," she added.
The Academy of Chocolate was established in 2005 by five of Britain's leading chocolate professionals.
Now in the sixth year of the awards, participants noticed some change this year.
Suzanne James said her company was probably the smallest chocolate factory Raw Goodies in the world. She packed the chocolate her partner made, while their daughter tasted it.
"Last year mostly the big chocolate company won the awards," she said. But this year Raw Goodies won the bronze award of best packing bars.
They used recycled books and magazines to pack the chocolate. The colourful pictures of Tin Tin and other comic book figures made the products unique.
"This award is quite an encouragement for us," she added.
