Earthquake tremors jolt Indian-controlled Kashmir
Earthquake tremors Wednesday jolted Indian-controlled Kashmir and its adjoining areas after a 5.6-magnitude quake hit Hindukush in Afghanistan, officials said.
According to the Meteorological Department officials in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, the moderate earthquake with its epicenter at Hindukush in Afghanistan struck at 2:55 p.m.(local time).
"The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.6 on Richter scale and was located at 34.51 degrees north latitude and 70.20 degrees east longitude in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan," said an official at Meteorological Department's control room in Srinagar.
"The tremors were felt here as well." said the official.
The earthquake was felt throughout Kashmir. Panic stricken residents were seen rushing out of houses and buildings in Srinagar city because of the tremors.
Officials said no reports of damage were received so far from any part of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
Geologists say Indian-controlled Kashmir is located in a zone of high seismic activity.
Srinagar falls in Seismic Zone-V and other parts of Indian- controlled Kashmir in Seismic Zone IV.
A high intensity quake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale with its epicenter in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir shook the region on October 8, 2005, causing large scale destruction and killing 80,000 people.
