At least seven people were killed and many others wounded when two mortar shells landed Wednesday in the Syrian capital Damascus' eastern suburb of Jaramana, the state TV said.

The mortars landed near the municipal building and nearby roads in Jaramana, the TV said, adding that grave material damages were caused.

Meanwhile, pro-government activists cited medical sources at al- Radi Hospital in Jaramana as stating that a total of 13 people were killed and more than 23 wounded in the attack.

Jaramana, an eastern suburb dominated by Christians and Druze, has been repeatedly battered with car bombs and mortar shells.

The Syrian government blames the armed rebels of being behind the shelling.

Meanwhile, Syria's state media cited a military source as denying media reports that the rebels have overrun parts of the military airport of Ming in the northern province of Aleppo.

"The reports are totally untrue and fall within the framework of the media misguiding," the source said, adding that the Syrian troops are proceeding in hammering down the rebels' dens in Aleppo countryside.

The state media also reported the killing of unspecified number of armed rebels during clashes with the Syrian troops in the eastern oil-rich Deir al-Zour province.

According to al-Ekhbaria TV, the Syrian forces have also foiled the blast of a suicide car bomb rigged with 1,000 kg of explosives that was planned to go off near a government establishment in the old airport neighborhood in Deir al-Zour.
