US slaps sanctions on foreign companies over Syria
The United States on Wednesday imposed fresh sanctions on persons and entities for providing support to the Syrian government, including companies based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Netherlands and Switzerland.
The Department of Treasury added to its blacklist the UAE-based Maxima Middle East Trading Co., Dutch firm Staroil B.V. and two of its senior executives, Alexander Hollebrand and Paul Van Mazijk, as well as Swiss companies Rixo International Trading Ltd and Bluemarine SA, and Halis Bektas, a senior executive of both firms.
Abdulkarim Group, a Syria-based company, was also hit with sanctions that freeze all assets of those targeted and bar American citizens from doing business with them.
The Treasury said the move was targeting those providing specialty petroleum products and facilitating "deceptive" transactions for the Syrian government, which has been engaging in conflict with the opposition since March 2011.
