N.Korea blasts S.Korea for disbanding pro-DPRK party
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Saturday blasted South Korean authorities for disbanding a pro-DPRK opposition party and stripping its parliamentary seats, saying the move was a "crude violation of democracy" in South Korea.
This is "a hideous and crucial case that blatantly challenges human civilization and universal human rights," the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea (CPRK) said in a bulletin carried by the official KCNA news agency.
South Korea's constitutional court ruled Friday that the Unified Progressive Party (UPP), a minor political party considered as a "blind follower" of the DPRK, should be dismissed.
The UPP will be forced to forfeit all state subsidies and assets and all five lawmakers of the left-leaning party will be removed. By-elections will be held in April for the empty seats, according to the National Election Commission.
The disbandment was the first such case for South Korea since 1948 when the country adopted its first constitution.
The CPRK said the move taken by the South Korean authorities was a revenge on the UPP, whose leader Lee Jung-hee had expressed her deep loathing for late strongman Park Chung-hee, father of current President Park Geun-hye.
Lee said during a TV debate for the 2012 presidential election that she ran for the presidency to prevent Park from being elected by carrying out election campaigns against Park, then candidate of the ruling Saenuri Party.
The disbandment aimed to "wipe out pro-reunification patriotic forces and prevent the opposition party from coming to power," the CPRK said.
The conservative forces in South Korea "obsessed by confrontation with fellow countrymen" will only cause a war disaster rather than contribute to the nation's reunification, it added.
The UPP came to be dispelled in three years after its launch in December 2011. The party captured much spotlight in 2012 when it won 13 parliamentary seats, but it has since declined for illegalities in the primary for proportional representative candidates.
