Five star Barca end 2014 on a high

FC Barcelona produced a strong second half to end 2014 on a positive note thanks to a 5-0 win at home to struggling Cordoba.

Pedro Rodriguez opened the scoring for Barca in the second minute of what turned out to be a dull second half, but things improved after the break as Luis Suarez's first league goal since joining from Liverpool doubled Barca's lead seven minutes into the second half. The Uruguayan controlled a pass from Pedro to calmly finish a move begun by Andres Iniesta.

Xavi Hernandez came on as a second half sub and made his 741st official appearance for the club, which sees him equal former Real Madrid striker, Raul Gonzalez's record number of outfield appearances.

Xavi provided the cross which allowed Gerard Pique to head home Barca's third of the game with 10 minutes remaining.

Two minutes later Messi added Barca's fourth as a loose ball in the Cordoba penalty area fell kindly for him to beat Juan Carlos and he netted a fifth in injury to give the score a healthy look to end the year.

Valencia also finished on a high after Paco Alcacer's first half goal gave them a 1-0 win away to Eibar in the first ever meeting between the two sides.

Eibar controlled most of the ball, but were unable to create clear chances against a well-organized side which moves into fourth place in the table.

Real Sociedad were denied another positive result as David Moyes' side saw how an injury time penalty saw a share of the points after Sergio Canales goal had looked certain to send the points back to San Sebastian

The day ended with Espanyol winning their first away win of the season thanks to Lucas Vazquez's second half winner. Sergio Garcia had put Espanyol ahead early in the game following an error from Rayo keeper, before Leo Baptistao levelled before the break, before the winger ensured his side end the year in mid-table and a second goal from Garcia with virtual the last kick of the game made it 3-1.
