Hamas arrests Gaza jihadis behind latest rocket attack
Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said on Sunday that Hamas detained members of a global jihadi group in the Gaza Strip who fired a rocket into southern Israel over the weekend.
"It turns out that it's one of the global jihad organizations, one of those so-called rogue organizations," Ya'alon said.
A Katyusha rocket fired from Gaza at noon on Friday marked the third such attack since the end of the 50-day conflict between Israel and Hamas in July and August.
Residents of Israeli communities near the border of the coastal enclave scrambled for shelter as air raid sirens wailed shortly before the projectile exploded in an open field.
Israel's Air Force responded before dawn on Saturday with a strike on a cement factory in southern Gaza which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said later in the day was generating cement to repair Hamas tunnels that were bombed during the war.
It was the first Israeli strike in Gaza since an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire went into effect on Aug. 26.
There were no reports of injuries in neither the rocket attack nor the retaliatory airstrike.
"It's crystal clear that Hamas is responsible for fire from within the Gaza Strip, which is why we took the trouble to relay messages - via Egypt - to Hamas in Gaza, as well as responding through an strike on a cement factory that produced material for use in tunnels," Ya'alon said.
The Israeli defense minister said Israel has demanded that Hamas needs to ensure that "not even a single rocket is fired from Gaza."
"In the event a rocket is fired, we will respond accordingly," Ya'alon said, expressing hope the Islamist group is "interested in calmness rather than escalation."
