China sends 1st infantry battalion for UN peacekeeping

China dispatched its first infantry battalion for United Nations peacekeeping missions in South Sudan on Dec. 22, 2014.

The 700 troops, including 13 female soldiers, will protect civilians, U.N. staff and humanitarian workers by performing patrol and security duties in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

China sent the forces at the invitation of the U.N., according to Geng Yansheng, spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense. Geng dismissed rumors that China sent the force to protect its interests in the oil-rich country.

As of September 2014, China had more than 1,800 peacekeepers in Africa. Of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, China has sent the largest number of peacekeepers on missions throughout the globe.
