Chief minister of the Indian-controlled Kashmir Omar Abdullah Wednesday submitted his resignation to the region's governor, an official spokesman said.

"Omar Abdullah, the chief minister called on Governor N. N. Vohra in Jammu today in the afternoon submitted his resignation as chief minister," a government spokesman said. "The governor has accepted his resignation."

No political party has won majority in the region's elections to claim the sole government formation, which was viewed by analysts as the reason for Omar Abdullah's resignation.

Omar Abdullah's National Conference (NC) ended up with merely 15 seats, the election results showed on Tuesday.

The region's pro-India Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged as the largest party with 28 seats, followed by the right- wing Hindu nationalist Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), which got 25 seats.

The Congress party and independents won 12 and seven seats respectively.

The Indian-controlled Kashmir is a Muslim majority region with 87-strong assembly (lawmaking body).

BJP has got mandate from the Hindu-dominated Jammu province, while as PDP has got votes from the Muslim dominated areas.

Analysts say, for the government formation, the parties have to form a coalition.
