German hacker fakes fingerprints from public photos
A German hacker claims he can fake your fingerprints without physically getting close to you.
Jan Krissler, known by his alias Starbug, demonstrated his techniques on Saturday at the Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg, Germany.
Krissler showed how he reproduced people's fingerprints from photos that show their fingers, and then used these fingerprints for biometric authentication.
He emphasized that these photos were taken using a standard photo camera.
Using his method, Krissler faked the thumbprint of German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, using a close-up picture of her thumb, obtained during a news conference in October, as well as several other photographs taken from different angles.
"After this talk, politicians will presumably wear gloves when talking in public," Krissler warned.
The demonstration, which was streamed online, intended to warn the world about overreliance on certain security technologies.
Chaos Communication Congress is an annual meeting organized by the Chaos Computer Club, the largest association of hackers in Europe.
