More rhinos poached in S Africa in 2014
More rhinos have been poached in South Africa in 2014 compared with 2013, according to statistics released on Monday.
Between January and November of 2014, 1,020 rhinos were killed across South Africa, with an increase of 16 from 2013, the World Wildlife Fund South Africa said.
The number of rhinos poached this year could rise because the latest tally does not include December.
The Kruger National Park (KNP) in northeastern South Africa recorded the most losses at 672, to be followed by Limpopo Province at 110 and KwaZulu-Natal at 70.
Growing demand for rhino horns in world market, Asia in particular, has been blamed for the upsurge in rhino poaching in South Africa, home to more than 80 percent of the world's rhino population.
South Africa's rhino population will be close to extinction by 2026 if no effective measures were taken, the government warns.
