A car bomb exploded near a security checkpoint in a major town in northeastern Nigeria's state of Yobe on Wednesday, killing six people, local police authorities said.

The explosion occurred in Fika Town, said state police chief Marcus Danladi, who noted the explosive device was hidden in a car heading to an unknown destination.

"The six casualties were the people in the bomb-laden car," he said.

He said security operatives were on top of the situation, allaying fears of citizens on more attacks in the northeastern province, especially in Damaturu, the state capital. Damaturu was recently invaded by local terror group Boko Haram.

Yobe is one of the three northeastern states in Nigeria where an emergency rule, declared by President Goodluck Jonathan, subsists. It shares border with Adamawa and Borno states, the two other provinces known as stronghold of Boko Haram, which has proved to be a major security threat in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country.

Boko Haram seeks to enshrine the Islamic Sharia law in the constitution.
