Violent clashes rage in Damascus' suburb
Violent clashes have been raging since early Wednesday in eastern countryside of Syria's capital Damascus between government forces and an array of jihadist groups, a monitoring group and witnesses reported.
The clashes raged in the suburb of Jobar in eastern al-Ghouta countryside of Damascus between Syrian forces and the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front and other jihadist groups, coupled with heavy shelling by the government troops on that area, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported, spelling no further details.
Meanwhile, witnesses who live close to the area described the rattling sound of clashes and shelling targeting the area. The wailing of the military ambulances were also heard. Syrian warplanes also took part in pounding the rebel-held areas in the eastern countryside of Damascus.
Recent reports from pro-government media said the Syrian troops were advancing in Jobar, adding that the area was 90 percent exposed to the fire of Syrian army.
Rebels' influence in Jobar has threatened the eastern districts of the capital, with mortar shells slamming into residential areas including the predominantly Christian neighborhoods of Bab Touma and Qassa.
Throughout the country's nearly four-year civil war, rebels in the suburb have repeatedly attempted to breach the capital from Jobar.
