Japanese Emperor: Japan should learn from history
Japanese Emperor Akihito has offered his New Year greetings at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
"At this beginning of the year, I would like to pray for peace and happiness for everyone both in our country and around the world."
A crowd of thousands gathered in the palace courtyard to listen to the annual address by the Emperor.
This comes after the 81-year-old emperor release a statement, saying Japan should learn from history as the country "considering its future direction".
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the World War II.
The emperor's remarks come at a time when Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to issue a new statement during the anniversary.
