3 in custody for shooting New York police officers
The New York Police said Tuesday that three people are now in custody in connection with the shooting of two police officers responding to a robbery in Bronx the night before.
Police said that the suspects are being questioned, but so far, no charges have been filed.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said that Monday night, the officers were searching for suspects wanted for an armed robbery which occurred earlier at a grocery store in the neighborhood.
According to him, the five officers, part of a five-member plain clothes Anti-Crime team, then spotted two possible suspects in connection with the robbery.
One of those suspects went into a Chinese restaurant on Tiebout Avenue near East 184th Street in New York city borough of Bronx, while the other remained on the street.
As the officers approached one man in the street, the other man inside the restaurant pulled out a gun and began shooting from the doorway, police said.
"They approached the male outside when the male inside began firing on the officers," Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said at a news conference on Tuesday.
New York City Major Bill de Blasio said at a press conference that the police did something that was "extraordinary brave", and this is "absolutely" a case of officers to protect their fellow New Yorkers.
"They went above and beyond the call to protect their fellow New Yorkers," de Blasio said. "Thank God the officers are doing well and will recover."
"I want to also say this is another indicator of the dangers that our officers face in the line of duty," he said. "We depend on them to keep this whole city safe."
The shooting happened about two weeks after New York police officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were ambushed and killed while sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn. The killer, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who killed himself soon after, had said he was seeking to avenge white police officers' killing of two unarmed black men this summer.
New York City police officers have been accusing the Mayor of encouraging anti-police fervor because of his support of protests against police, and expressed their dissent by turning backs on him during the funerals for the two slain police officers.
