Kerry to be in India for economic summit
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to India on Saturday for an economic summit, the State Department said Tuesday.
The top American envoy will land in Ahmedabad, the largest city of the western Indian state of Gujarat, for a biennial summit aiming to attract foreign investment for the state, spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki told reporters.
She said Kerry and top American business leaders will highlight the "critical role" U.S. technology plays in economic growth across India and the Indo-Pacific region, as well as in boosting trade and investment between the two countries.
This is the first time the United States will join the so- called Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit as a partner country. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the summit.
President Barack Obama is also scheduled to travel to India this month to attend the country's Republic Day celebration.
Modi visited the U.S. in September last year and met with Obama at the White House.
