Beijing had 45 heay pollution days last year, according to the report on Beijing's air quality released by Beijing environmental protection bureau.

Statistics indicate that the annual concentration of the city's main atmospheric pollutant -- PM 2.5 -- dropped 4 percent on a year-on-year basis, just fell short of the year's target of 5 percent.

Zhang Dawei, the director of Beijing Environmental Monitoring Center, underscored that PM 2.5 particles cased heavy pollution for 45 days in 2014, contributing to one third of the pollutant concentration for the whole year.

Zhang pointed out that the heavy pollution nearly took place in every month except June, August and September in 2014.

The report notes that, during the heavy pollution days in 2014, over half of the pollutants came from neighboring regions.

In 2015, Beijing aims to cut PM2.5 index by around five percent and reduce the emission of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides by six percent.

The city will try to keep its coal consumption under 15 million tonnes and further phase out 200,000 vehicles as well as more than 300 polluting factories, according to Yu Jianhua, an official of the bureau.

Beijing will cut its cement capacity to 5 million tonnes, Yu added.

With a population of more than 20 million, Beijing has been plagued by smog in the past few years due to industrial pollution and vehicle exhaust.

In Beijing and surrounding areas, PM 2.5 should fall by about 25 percent from 2012 levels by 2017, according to government plans.
