Yingluck impeachment case to conclude within January
The impeachment case against former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra should conclude before the end of January, Vice President of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) Surachai Liangboonlertchai said Wednesday.
The case, in which the former premier has been accused of dereliction of duty in overseeing a controversial rice-pledging scheme, is set to open on Friday and Yingluck is expected to appear before the NLA to deliver a defense statement.
The NLA will allow the National Anti-Corruption Commission ( NACC), which made the accusations, and Yingluck to deliver their statements and answer questions with no time limit, Surachai was quoted by the Nation newspaper as saying.
The NLA will also commence impeachment proceedings against former Senate Speaker Nikhom Wairatpanich and former House Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranon on Thursday.
The case against the two politicians was also filed by the NACC for their role in passing a charter amendment to change the composition of the Senate in September 2013. The amendment was later ruled unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court.
The NLA will set up two inquiry committees to pose questions on the two cases, and the committees will be neutral, Surachai said.
The impeachment process against holders of political office takes 23 days, and conclusions on both cases are thus expected by the end of this month, unless postponement is sought by any party involved, he said, adding postponement is not necessary under current circumstances.
