According to a research report issued by the bureau yesterday, 26 percent of the air pollutants monitored in Shanghai in 2012-13 came from other cities and provinces.

Of the air pollution created from within the city, 29 percent was from cars, ships and other modes of transport, 29 percent was from industry, 13.5 percent was from coal burning, 13.5 percent was from dust, and 15 percent from agricultural production and the general public.

While Shanghai fared better than northern cities like Beijing and Tianjin in terms of cutting pollution from coal burning in the period, its emissions from industrial production accounted for a larger percentage of its overall air pollution.

Pollution was worse in spring and winter than in summer and autumn, the report said.

The research, which was approved by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and issued by the bureau with permission from the State Council, was based on air samples and data collected in Shanghai between 2012 and 2013.
