Atletico beat rivals Madrid in Copa del Rey
Fernando Torres was unable to celebrate his return to Atletico Madrid with a goal but played for an hour as his side defeated local rivals Real Madrid 2-0 in an intense first leg in the last 16 round of the Copa del Rey in the Vicente Calderon.
A Raul Garcia penalty and a Jose Gimenez header gave Atletico a comfortable lead to defend in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium next week.
Despite so much expectation caused by Torres' return, the first half was a letdown with Real Madrid playing two defensive midfielders and Atletico happy to sit deep and look for a long ball forward to Torres, who looked short of match fitness.
With Cristiano Ronaldo looking unhappy on the Real Madrid bench, despite Gareth Bale having a goal correctly ruled out for offside after 13 minutes his side lacked a cutting edge.
They did control more of the ball in a bad-tempered first half, but the visitors' best chance came when Sami Khedira was unable to head home from a cross into the area.
Atletico's best chance came when Raul Garcia, who was playing as a right sided midfielder, also failed to direct a header on target against the goal defender by Keylor Navas, who was given a chance in the Real Madrid goal ahead of Iker Casillas.
It was no surprise that the score was opened from a set piece and Atletico took the lead in the 68th minute after Sergio Ramos committed a clear penalty when he pulled Raul Garcia back. Garcia picked himself up to score from the penalty sport.
Immediately after the goal Torres left the field to be replaced by midfielder Koke. while four minutes later Ronaldo came on for Real Madrid, who looked determined to keep the ball and pin Atletico back in their own half.
Isco gave another example of his enormous class with a backheel pass to Ronaldo, but as both sides juggled with substitutes, Real Madrid continued to look sluggish after the Xmas break and lacking the crisp passing that had led them to 22 consecutive wins before the turn of the year.
Jose Gimenez doubled Atletico's lead with a header from a corner after 76 minutes with a goal similar to that scored by Nicolas Otamendi which condemned Real to defeat in Valencia on Saturday.
The goal stunned Real Madrid and both Alvaro Arbeloa and Sergio Ramos very lucky to stay on the pitch in the closing minutes, Arbeloa for a horrible foul on Gabi and Ramos for a handball which should have been a second yellow card.
