S. Korean prosecutors to deport pro-DPRK Korean American
South Korean prosecutors said on Thursday they have demanded the deportation of a Korean American woman who had made remarks sympathetic to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) during a series of talk shows.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office asked the Justice Ministry to deport Shin Eun-mi for her pro-DPRK activity in violation of the National Security Law, which bans any activity to praise, encourage and glorify the DPRK regime.
The Korean American woman made positive remarks toward the DPRK regime during the talk show in November last year co-hosted by Hwang Sun, former deputy spokeswoman of the now-defunct Democratic Labor Party.
Some conservative South Korean civic groups filed a complaint with prosecutors against Hwang and Shin, citing their pro-DPRK activities and remarks.
Shin reportedly planned to go back to the United States on Dec. 12, but was banned from leaving South Korea on Dec. 11 as she disobeyed summons from police for questioning. Since then, police has summoned Shin three times.
If Shin is deported from South Korea, she cannot gain an admission into the country for the next five years.
