New iPhones bite into Android's dominance
Strong sales of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have helped Apple's iOS market share go up across Europe, the United States, Australia and China, narrowing the gap with the globally dominant Android platform, according to a new report.
The latest data from market researcher Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that for the three months ending November 2014, iOS market share increased in Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, the United States, Australia, and China, thanks to the release of the new iPhone models. At the same time, Android saw a decline in most of these markets.
In the U.S., Android's drop was the first since September 2013. Android had a market share of 48.4 percent in the three months, while iOS followed closely with 47.4 percent.
In China, Android retained its leading position with a market share of 80.4 percent, while iOS had only 18.1 percent. "The wide variety of products offered by local manufacturers continues to push Android's share," said Tamsin Timpson, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Asia.
Japan is the only surveyed country where iOS declined while Android increased. Even so, the iOS market share there was still higher than Android.
