The bird flu virus H5N8 has been found in wild birds in Germany, local media said on Thursday.

According to German media Spiegel Online, the city administration Rostock reported on Thursday that a white stork from Rostock Zoo in the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was detected with highly pathogenic bird flu H5N8.

Meanwhile, two wild ducks infected with the dangerous bird flu virus H5N8 in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt have been shot, said the local government on Wednesday.

The H5N8 virus which was reported in Asia earlier was discovered for the first time in November on a poultry farm in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Germany, then later in Lower Saxony and several other European countries.

The report said that the H5N8 virus has not yet been known to infect humans who were exposed to the H5N8 subtype.
