Shanghai automobile exhibition to ban show girls

An industry insider said on Friday that this year's Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition will not use showgirl models to promote cars.

Yang Xueliang, director of publicity for Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd, wrote on his microblog: "My colleagues have received notice from the organizers of the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition that the models will be called off this year."

Yang also commented: "It will be better to shut off all the celebrities and performance, and other local automobile exhibitions should do the same. Bring back the peaceful car exhibition! "

CE.cn, the website of The Economic Daily, also reported that an official with the Shanghai organizers confirmed the news.

But the organizers of Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition have not yet released an official statement. Sources said the organizers are still studying the issue.

In recent years, there have always been controversies and scandals about using showgirls to promote the cars at automobile exhibitions. Some female models have worn very explicit and almost nude costumes to generate hype, gaining more of the spotlight for their sexual displays than the cars themselves and triggering waves of criticism and security problems.

The 16th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, the biggest in Asia, will be held from April 22 -29, 2015 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai.
