Electrical problem blamed for Washington subway smoke

US officials say initial findings suggest that an electrical problem caused the deadly Washington subway smoke that killed one woman and sent over 80 people to hospital.

The smoke filled six subway cars in a tunnel.

There was no fire on the train.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the investigation could take six to 12 months into what triggered the electrical arcing that caused the smoke.

A hospital spokesperson says one of the two critical patients has been upgraded to serious.
