Palestine plans to present new draft resolution to UN
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas proposed on Thursday formation of a Kuwait-led Arab committee to study going back to the UN Security Council (UNSC) with a new draft resolution to end Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
Addressing an extraordinary meeting of Arab foreign ministers at the Arab League headquarters here in Cairo, Abbas voiced willingness to resume peace talks with Israel provided that they have a clear content and a specific strategy "so as not to be a waste of time."
"The issue requires an international resolution or rather an American resolution, and then everything will go on the right track," he added, blaming Israel for the current peace process deadlock.
Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Araby stressed that Arabs should work on getting necessary international support for another UN resolution to end Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
Since its creation in 1948, Israel has been expanding settlement construction on Palestinian occupied territories, a policy that has been one of the main reasons for fruitless peace negotiations between the two sides.
The Arab-proposed draft resolution intended to be submitted to the UN will push for Israeli withdrawal of the territories beyond the pre-1976 borders and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital city.
In December 2014, the UN rejected a similar Palestinian-proposed resolution as it did not get enough "yes" votes. The new draft resolution is likely to be vetoed again by the United States.
