Abe's attitude toward historical issues damages US-Japan relations
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s attitude toward historical issues has caused damage to the U.S.-Japan alliance relationship, the U.S. congressional report pointed on Friday.
“Historical issues plaguing Japan's relations between its neighboring countries will attract more and more attention of the world,” the report stressed.
The report, completed by five researchers from U.S. Congressional Research Institute, was quoted by Japan's Kyodo News Agency, as saying that Abe’s behavior in this August marking the 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II be closely watched.
Abe said on Jan. 5 he would release a fresh statement on the war to express “self-examination,” but said nothing about making apology for Japan’s war responsibility while noting that Japan would continue to push the policy on the right of "collective self-defence".
Japan’s relations with South Korea and China have long been deeply impacted by the country’s attitude toward its wartime actions.
The East Asian neighbors will pay particularly close attention to whether Abe will uphold his predecessor Tomiichi Murayama’s 1995 apology for the “tremendous damage and suffering” Japan caused to people across Asia during the war.
