Security challenges pose threat to Nigeria's election
Some security challenges were posing real threat to Nigeria's election, Attahiru Jega, the chairman of the West African country's electoral body said on Monday.
Jega made the remarks in central north city of Kaduna at a two- day sensitization forum on the proliferation of small arms and light weapons ahead of the general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chief said the organization was ready to conduct free, fair and credible polls.
He stressed that measures must be taken by security agencies to prevent the use of arms "to steal the people's collective mandate, thus subverting the whole process."
Jega urged the security agencies to act professionally to protect the electoral process.
According to the chairman, the success of the elections is a collective responsibility.
Nigeria has fixed the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 14, 2015. State assembly and governorship elections are slated for Feb. 28.
