Nigeria's electoral body reaffirms commitment to credible polls

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to the conduct of free, fair and acceptable elections in February.

Attahiru Jega, chairman of the commission, gave the assurance in a paper he presented at the Bayero University in northwest Kano State.

Jega said preparations for the elections were currently being finalized to ensure that the process was conducted in accordance with best practices.

The commission has established new policies to guide its work in addition to embarking on far-reaching planning of its operations through a strategic plan, he added.

He enjoined all stakeholders to contribute their quota in order to bring about and ensure free, fair, credible and peaceful elections in the country.

According to him, the call is necessary in view of the fact that all stakeholders have significant roles to play in conducting the elections.

Nigeria's electoral body has fixed the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 14, 2015.

The commission also fixed state assembly and governorship elections for Feb. 28.

The organization has approved 88 observer groups to participate in the 2015 general elections. Out of the 88 approved observer groups, 72 were domestic and 16 were international groups.

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had gained and remained in power at the center since Nigeria's transition to civilian rule in 1999.
