A video of Wing Chun master Yang Chengzhang getting beaten up by a Sanda champion on a reality show and breaking his rib has recently attracted a lot of attention on the Internet.

The video has been seen as a contest between traditional martial arts and modern combat. After days of silence, Yang finally stood up and talked about the contest.

According to statistics, the video, which was taken from a reality show in Tianjin TV on Jan. 10, has been played over 20 million times. It has aroused heated debate in the Chinese martial art circle over which is better, traditional martial arts or modern combat. Some say that traditional martial art is just a kind of dance, and practitioners cannot withstand even a single blow. Others think Yang Chengzhang does not represent Wing Chun.

"What you see is not the true story, people have misunderstood me," Yang emphasized over and over again. "I never said I was representing Wing Chun… I just want to promote traditional Chinese martial arts. From the very beginning, I was told not to use various martial arts tricks, which obviously decided the result: I would not win."

Brief introduction on Yang Changzhang:

Yang Chengzhang, 41 years old, comes from Hubei Province in Central China. He began practicing martial arts when he was eight, and became a master in mook jong. He was once the bodyguard of Jet Li.
