US state of Texas gets new governor

Texas on the Gulf of Mexico got a new governor in 14 years since 2000 as Greg Abbott, a 57-year-old Republican, was sworn in Tuesday in Austin, the capital city of the Lone Star state.

Abbott serves as the 48th governor of Texas, to replace Rick Perry, also a Republican, who was governor of Texas from Dec. 21, 2000 to Jan. 20 2015.

Abbott, who was previously state attorney general, was raised up by a motorized platform to take the oath of office and give his speech to the expected audience on the Capitol ground. He is paralyzed and has to use a wheelchair after a tree fell on him in 1984 while jogging in Houston, also in Texas, said local media reports.

In his speech, Abbott stressed the spirit of Texas and the opportunity it provides, while speaking of the importance that Texas, which shares border with Mexico, plays economically and politically to the rest of the nation. He also pledged to continue fighting the federal government on spending, regulation and any federal initiative that uses the guise of fairness to rob the Lone Star state of its freedom.

"Texas is the place where the improbable becomes the possible," he said, adding that "because as goes Texas, so goes America, and as goes America, so goes the world, so we must take the lead here in Texas. We must work together to ensure that even the future is bigger in Texas."

The new governor also vowed to secure the Texas-Mexico border and promised to continue the economic growth that has made Texas the country's top job-creating state -- even in the face of falling oil prices that could hurt the states such as Texas that rely on production of oil and natural gas, while warning the 84th legislative session of the challenges by saying that "there's more we must do. More for the families stuck in traffic. More for parched towns thirsty for water. More for parents who fear their child is falling behind in school. More for employers searching for skilled workers."

Perry, who had ruled the Lone Star state since 2000, did not attend Tuesday's swearing-in ceremony for Abbott. It was reported that Perry will announce an expected second presidential run perhaps as early as May or June.
