Li Chengzhang, 47, is the prime suspect in an illegal hunting and wildlife trapping ring that was busted by local police last November.

On the morning of Oct. 17, 2014, Li Chengzhang went with four of his friends to a mountain in Qingxi County in the city of Qingchuan to hunt for wild animals.

The men separated and each hunted by himself. Li heard a gunshot in the late afternoon. His friend Bai Xiaofan told him that he had seen a black bear by the cliff and shot at it. The wounded bear fell off the cliff and died.

Li and his friends went to the spot where the bear fell, hung its body on a tree and skinned it. Afterwards, they left since it was already dark.

The group came back to the mountain early the next morning and cut the flesh of the bear into five chunks.

Li then sold the flesh to a real estate businessman in the City of Mianyang for 26,000 yuan (US$4,182). Local police said the bear meat might have been eaten by the buyer.

Black bear is under second class protection under China's wildlife protection law. Unauthorized hunting of protected wildlife is illegal under Chinese law.

There are a number of authorized hunting parks in China, but the animals there are mostly artificially bred and thus cannot meet the demands of ever-increasing hunting enthusiasts, the West China Metropolis Daily's report said.
